On February 9, 1864 the largest prisoner of war escape in American history took place when 109 Union officers tunneled their way out of the Confederacy's infamous Libby Prison, using only the crudest of tools.  This story of bravery, determination, and refusal to quit under nearly insurmountable odds is reported in meticulous detail.

Fighting rats, hunger, and the fear of detection, several attempts failed before the final effort was rewarded.

For the first time ever, the names of the escapees are listed, with brief biographies of each and a short note as to whether his effort was successful or whether he was recaptured.

We have recently been informed that this book has been placed on the recommended reading list of a major university's doctoral program in History.
